mumof4 Posted December 6, 2005 Report Posted December 6, 2005 Fraud have said that we need to have our cam belt changed at a cost of 365 squid B) yet an independant dealer said that we dont have a cam belt but a timing chain!!!who is right??? :huh: .Even the manual says cam belt.i have a ford galaxy 1.9 tdi ghia x reg 51k miles on the clock.many thanks in advance 4 your help.Marian. I would expect that kind of price if it was a chain as the engine has to come out. But it is not, it is a belt and it is straight forwards to do if you buy a few specialist tools. Quote

mumof4 Posted December 7, 2005 Author Report Posted December 7, 2005 Are you implying that because i am female i would not be able to do as good a job as you men who try to fix your own cars to save some money? :P .I fix many things around the house that need doing as i love to fix things.Ok...a car is a bit bigger than a washing machine or telly etc......but we all have to learn somehow...and if i fail and have to call on fraud to undo my mistakes then i will learn! :( BUT!!...i have no intention of failing....i like my galaxy.....and i have the time to fix it ....why should i throw my money at fraud when i can throw it at the money munchers!!!!!!!!lol.Isnt it why we are all here if we need help with a problem???to get advise from those who know on how to put things right!!Marian.xx Quote

I was merely implying that: If you can't tell if your car has a cambelt or a camchain THEN YOU SHOULDN'T TRY TO REPLACE IT, GENDER IS IRRELEVANT. As dave_m has correctly implied; if you get this even slightly wrong then your repair bill WILL suddenly squirt uncomfortably into four figures. I fully appreciate your 'can do' attitude, and fervently wish that more ladies would make the effort to undertake practical tasks. However a learning curve can also be a slippery slope! :( Quote

How does the tensioner/damper actually work and what is the purpose of the 4mm gap? Is it always necessary to change the damper? Quote
